1.4 Starting the Engine

Before moving a vehicle, it’s important to know how to safely and correctly start the engine. Following these steps every time will help you build safe driving habits from the beginning.

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

  • Make sure your seat and mirrors are properly adjusted.

  • Fasten your seatbelt and ensure all passengers are buckled.

  • Confirm the gear selector is in Park (P) or Neutral (N).

  • Check that the parking brake is set.

Step 2: Insert and Turn the Key / Push Start Button

  • Insert the key into the ignition (or press the start button if the vehicle is keyless).

  • Turn the key to the “ON” position and pause for a moment to let dashboard lights run their system check.

  • Continue turning the key (or hold the start button with your foot on the brake) until the engine starts. Release immediately once the engine runs.

Step 3: Check Indicators

  • Verify that the warning lights on the dashboard turn off after the engine starts.

  • If a light stays on, consult the vehicle manual before driving.

Step 4: Release the Parking Brake

  • Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal.

  • Release the parking brake only when you are ready to shift into gear.

Safety Tip:
Never press the accelerator pedal while starting the engine, unless directed by the vehicle manufacturer. This can cause unnecessary wear or sudden movement.

Key Habit: Always take a moment to make sure your vehicle is safe, secure, and ready before shifting into drive.
