1.8 Getting Started – Getting Familiar With Vehicle Controls

Before driving, it’s important to understand the basic controls of your vehicle. Knowing where everything is and how it works helps you stay confident, safe, and prepared in any situation.

Primary Vehicle Controls:

  • Steering Wheel: Used to control the direction of the car. Keep your hands at the “9 and 3 o’clock” position for maximum control.

  • Pedals:

    • Accelerator (gas pedal): On the right, controls vehicle speed.

    • Brake pedal: In the middle (automatic cars) or next to the clutch (manual cars), used to slow or stop the car.

    • Clutch (manual cars only): On the far left, used for shifting gears.

Secondary Vehicle Controls:

  • Gear Selector:

    • Automatic: Park (P), Reverse (R), Neutral (N), Drive (D).

    • Manual: Shift lever with gears (1–5/6) and Reverse (R).

  • Parking Brake (Handbrake or Electronic): Prevents the vehicle from rolling when parked.

Dashboard Controls:

  • Ignition/Start Button: Starts and stops the engine.

  • Instrument Panel: Displays speedometer, fuel gauge, engine temperature, and warning lights.

  • Turn Signal Lever: Activates left or right indicators.

  • Headlight Switch: Controls headlights, high beams, and sometimes fog lights.

  • Windshield Wipers & Washers: Keep the windshield clear in rain or snow.

  • Horn: Located in the center of the steering wheel, used to alert other drivers.

Comfort & Safety Controls:

  • Climate Controls: Adjust heating, air conditioning, and defrost.

  • Mirror Adjustments: Switch or buttons to adjust side and rearview mirrors.

  • Seat Adjustments: Levers or buttons for moving the seat forward/backward, up/down, and reclining.

Why It Matters:
Understanding and practicing these controls before driving reduces distractions and helps you respond quickly to changing conditions on the road.

Key Habit:
Always take a few moments before driving to review your vehicle’s controls, especially if you are driving a different car than usual.
