1.9 Steering Techniques

Steering is one of the most important skills for safe driving. Using proper steering techniques helps you stay in control of the vehicle, drive smoothly, and respond quickly to hazards.

Hand Position on the Wheel:

  • The recommended position is “9 and 3 o’clock” (hands placed on either side of the wheel).

  • Keep your thumbs on the outside of the wheel rim for safety.

  • Avoid the old “10 and 2” position, since modern airbags deploy from the steering wheel and may cause injury if your hands are too high.

Steering Methods:

  1. Hand-Over-Hand Steering

    • Used for sharp turns, U-turns, and quick maneuvers.

    • One hand pulls the wheel down while the other hand crosses over to continue turning.

    • After completing the turn, quickly unwind the wheel back to straight.

  2. Push-Pull Steering (a.k.a. Shuffle Steering)

    • Recommended for most driving situations.

    • One hand pushes the wheel up while the other pulls it down on the opposite side.

    • This method keeps both hands on the wheel at all times and offers better control.

  3. One-Hand Steering

    • Used only when necessary, such as adjusting controls or backing up in a straight line.

    • Keep your other hand near the wheel so you can return to two-handed control quickly.

Tips for Good Steering:

  • Keep your grip relaxed but firm.

  • Look ahead in the direction you want the car to go — your hands will naturally follow your eyes.

  • Avoid “palming” the wheel (turning with just the palm of your hand), as it reduces control.

Key Habit:
Always maintain proper hand position and use the correct steering method for the situation. Smooth steering equals safer driving.
