3.8 – Construction Signs

Introduction

Hi, this is Daniel from National Driving School Utah. In this lesson, I want to talk about construction signs — the bright orange ones you’ve probably seen near road work. These signs are important because they warn you of changes in the normal flow of traffic and keep both drivers and workers safe.

What Construction Signs Look Like

  • Color: Always orange with black wording or symbols.

  • Shape: Usually diamond-shaped, but can also be rectangular.

  • Location: Placed well in advance of work zones to give you time to slow down and prepare.

Common Construction Signs

  1. Road Work Ahead

    • Alerts you that workers, equipment, or lane changes are ahead.

  2. Detour

    • Tells you that the normal route is closed and shows you the way around.

  3. Flagger Ahead

    • Indicates that a person with a stop/slow paddle is controlling traffic.

    • Be prepared to stop and follow instructions.

  4. Lane Shift / Lane Closed

    • Warns you that lanes are merging or narrowing.

    • Always merge early and safely.

  5. Reduced Speed Signs

    • Often posted in work zones.

    • In Utah, fines are usually doubled in construction areas if you’re caught speeding.

Safety in Construction Zones

  • Slow down — never assume workers can see you.

  • Pay attention — avoid distractions, even more than usual.

  • Merge early — don’t wait until the last second.

  • Obey flaggers — they have the same authority as traffic lights and signs.

  • Expect the unexpected — workers, equipment, and lane shifts can appear suddenly.

Why This Matters

Work zones are one of the most dangerous areas on the road. Most crashes in construction zones are caused by speeding and distracted driving. These signs are in place to save lives — both yours and the workers’.

Conclusion

Whenever you see orange signs, slow down, stay alert, and be ready for changes. Remember:

  • Orange = Construction or Maintenance.

  • Fines are often higher in work zones.

  • Respect the workers — they’re out there to improve the roads you drive on.
