Pre-Driving Checks and Adjustments

Introduction
Before starting your engine or shifting into gear, every safe driver must perform a quick set of checks and adjustments. These steps ensure that both you and your vehicle are ready for the road. Skipping them can compromise your comfort, visibility, and safety.

Step 1: Outside Checks

  1. Walk around the vehicle to look for obstacles, flat tires, or fluid leaks.

  2. Make sure windows, mirrors, and lights are clean and clear.

  3. Check for children, pets, or objects around the car that may not be visible once you’re inside.

Step 2: Seating Position

  1. Sit upright with your back against the seat.

  2. Adjust the seat so your feet can comfortably reach the pedals without stretching.

  3. Your knees should be slightly bent when pressing the pedals fully.

  4. Adjust seat height (if possible) so you can clearly see the road and dashboard.

Step 3: Steering Wheel Adjustment

  1. Adjust the wheel so your arms are slightly bent when holding it at the “9 and 3” position.

  2. Make sure you can see the dashboard gauges clearly over the steering wheel.

Step 4: Mirrors

  1. Rearview Mirror – Should show the entire back window without moving your head.

  2. Side Mirrors – Angle outward so you just barely see the side of your vehicle, reducing blind spots.

Step 5: Seat Belt & Headrest

  1. Buckle your seatbelt snugly across your lap and chest.

  2. Adjust the headrest so the middle of it aligns with the back of your head to prevent whiplash.

Step 6: Dashboard Check

  1. Insert the key or press the start button halfway to check the warning lights.

  2. Make sure there are no active warning indicators (such as engine, brakes, or airbags).

Why These Checks Matter

  • They ensure maximum visibility and comfort.

  • They prepare you to react quickly in emergencies.

  • They help prevent accidents caused by poor seating, blind spots, or mechanical issues.

Takeaway: Taking a few minutes for pre-driving checks and adjustments creates a safer driving experience for you, your passengers, and everyone on the road.
