6.21 – Vehicle Breakdowns

Introduction

Even with proper maintenance, vehicles can break down unexpectedly. Breakdowns can happen due to mechanical issues, overheating, running out of fuel, or electrical failures. Knowing what to do in such situations is crucial for your safety and the safety of others on the road.

Safety Tips for Handling Vehicle Breakdowns

  • Pull Over Safely: At the first sign of trouble, steer your vehicle to the right shoulder or as far off the roadway as possible. Avoid stopping in traffic lanes.

  • Turn On Hazard Lights: This alerts other drivers that your vehicle is disabled.

  • Stay Visible: Place reflective triangles or flares behind your car if available, especially at night or in poor visibility conditions.

  • Stay Inside if Unsafe: If you are on a busy highway, remain inside the vehicle with your seatbelt fastened until help arrives. Exiting near fast-moving traffic can be dangerous.

  • Call for Help: Use your cell phone to contact roadside assistance, law enforcement, or a tow service.

  • Don’t Accept Strangers’ Rides: Wait for official roadside help or someone you know and trust.

  • Prevent Future Breakdowns: Regularly service your vehicle, check oil, coolant, and battery levels, and keep an eye on warning lights.
