2.8 – Traffic Controls and Signals

Introduction

Traffic controls and signals are the “language of the road.” They guide drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians so everyone knows what to do and when to do it. Understanding these controls is essential for safe and legal driving. In this lesson, we’ll go over the three main categories: traffic signs, traffic signals (lights), and pavement markings.

1. Traffic Signs

Traffic signs use shapes, colors, and symbols to communicate quickly with drivers.

Regulatory Signs – Tell you what you must do.

  • Stop sign (red octagon): Come to a complete stop.

  • Yield sign (red and white triangle): Slow down and give the right-of-way.

  • Speed limit sign (white rectangle): Shows the legal maximum or minimum speed.

Warning Signs – Alert you to possible hazards ahead.

  • Yellow, diamond-shaped signs (curves, intersections, pedestrian crossings, animals).

Guide Signs – Provide directions and information.

  • Green signs show routes and destinations.

  • Blue signs mark services like gas, food, hospitals.

  • Brown signs mark parks and recreation areas.

2. Traffic Signals (Lights)

Traffic lights control movement at intersections.

  • Red Light: Stop completely.

  • Yellow Light: The light is about to turn red — stop if it’s safe to do so.

  • Green Light: Go, but yield to pedestrians and vehicles already in the intersection.

Other signal variations:

  • Flashing Red: Stop, then proceed when safe (like a stop sign).

  • Flashing Yellow: Caution, slow down, and proceed carefully.

  • Green Arrow: You may turn in the direction of the arrow; opposing traffic is stopped.

3. Pavement Markings

Lines and symbols on the road also guide drivers.

  • Solid Yellow Line: No passing allowed.

  • Broken Yellow Line: Passing is allowed when clear.

  • Solid White Line: Stay in your lane; lane changes are discouraged.

  • Broken White Line: You may change lanes with caution.

  • Crosswalks: Mark where pedestrians have the right-of-way.

  • Stop Lines: Thick white lines that show where to stop at intersections.

Why Traffic Controls Matter

  • Keep drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists organized.

  • Prevent accidents by reducing confusion.

  • Help maintain smooth traffic flow.

  • Provide clear instructions for safe and predictable driving.

Conclusion

Traffic signs, signals, and markings are the rules of the road in visual form. Safe drivers pay close attention to them and obey their instructions. By following traffic controls, you not only obey the law but also protect yourself and everyone around you.
